How to Play Dominoes
Dominoes are a type of rectangular black and white tile used for gaming. They can be stacked on end, and can also be knocked over. In addition, dominoes have a line down the middle. This line separates the ends into two squares. The value of the tiles is their number of spots. There are many different games you can play with dominoes, including scoring, trick taking, and solitaire.
Traditionally, European style dominoes were made from dark hardwoods like ebony and ivory, or from the silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell. However, some players use other objects as dominoes.
Dominoes are made from either wood or plastic. During the late 1700s, a French prisoner of war brought them to England. Later, they were introduced in France, Austria, and southern Germany.
Originally, each domino represented one of 21 possible results when you threw two six-sided dice. A common set of dominoes contains 28 pieces. These are called a “double-six set.” Other sets, such as a “double-nine set,” have 55 tiles. Lastly, a “double-18 set” has 190 tiles.
To begin a game, you draw seven dominoes from a stock. You then place them face down in a pile. Once all the pieces are in place, you can start the game by flicking the pieces against each other. If the first domino tips over, it will tip the next one, and so on.
As you progress, you will notice that the pips on the dominos become harder to tell. Pips are generally arranged as six-sided dice, and you will have to count the number of pips on each side of the domino before you can place the piece. Some large domino sets use Arabic numerals instead of pips.
Although there are many variations, the basic rule of the game remains the same. Players take turns placing seven of their own tiles in a pile, called the stock. Each player then selects seven additional tiles. When each player has seven, the game begins.
In the most basic game, you are attempting to place the entire double-six set in front of you, and then to make a match between your own tiles and the opponents. The total number of pips in your tiles is the same as the total number of pips in your opponent’s. If you’re playing a “concentration” variant, you need to make a match of twelve.
One type of game is known as Five-Up. It is played with multicolored tiles. Another variation of the game is called Che Deng. All of these types of games are popular, and are often adapted from card games.
Among the most popular domino games are the scoring games. The player who gets the most points wins. The players can try to score more points by lining up the dominoes in long lines, and the players can use other strategies to win. For example, a player can set a course of dominoes in order to get a certain number of pips.
